Richard obtained his degree in Law and American Studies at Keele University, attended the Guildford Law College and completed his training in London. On qualifying, Richard worked in a well known South Devon practice and in 2001 relocated to Bristol to work for Gregg Galbraith Quinn. In April 2007, Richard was made a partner at Gregg Latchams. Richard is the Honorary Treasurer of the Bristol Law Society and sits on the Executive Committee of the Dispute Resolution Section of the Law Society. He is also a member of the Professional Negligence Lawyer's Association and a member of the South West Landlord's Association.

Richard is a member of the Bristol Junior Chamber of Commerce and is a school governor at a local primary school.
